Iâd never broken work protocol on purpose.
My job has always been a borderline religion in my life. Even when I ruined it as much as I did, I couldnât just step away. It was a part of me. It stayed sterile and clean, separate from the rest of my life, except for when it was thrust into them.
With Roderic, it was different.
He took those clean, white corners of my job, and colored them fantastically bright. Iâd never seen anything like it! I was blindsided from the beginning.
The most important thing in my life was no longer my job.
With him, it was all some mixed bag, and I wasn't sure what to do going forward.
I just knew that whatever it was, I needed to be with him.
He made me feel right in ways nothing, and no one else had.
That is why I couldn't convince myself to feel guilty as I stood between his muscular thighs and kissed him on his work desk.
His hands were slowly unbuttoning my blouse.
Every button loosened was another inhibition wiped away, another worry I let go.
His lips slipped from mine and traced down my jawline and chest. Kissing and sucking deep marks into my skin, he chased my skin as my blouse revealed more and more of it.
My fingers were tangled in his dark hair. My short red nails ran circles along his scalp.
How many times was this man going to have to save my life?
I didnât deserve him.
He didnât seem to mind, though.
Tossing my blouse aside, he unhooked my bra and slid it off my arms as well.
âIâll never get tired of this,â he murmured as his kisses strayed lower. Pressing me back, he slipped down to his knees between me and the desk.
âIs that a promise?â I laughed.
I tried not to think about the last time a man was on his knees in front of me. My mind flew to my ring finger, and I glanced at it quickly to remind myself that it was empty. There wasn't a rush with Roderic, and I didn't have to hurry into a proposal.
Somehow, for just a split second, this felt like cheating.
The previous engagement was off, though, he'd left me when I shut down and was at my lowest. I couldn't blame him. It's not like I was easy to deal with during that time. Before it happened, I wasn't an emotional person, I just--
âAre you alright?â
Roderic stopped kissing my freshly exposed hip, and I snapped out of my thoughts.
âSorry, yeah, just a weird day,â I laughed and shook my head.
âShould I stop?â
âNo, itâd kill me,â I shook my head and played it off.
Roderic laughed, seeming to buy it, and pulled my slacks and underwear the rest of the way off. Wordlessly, his eyes burning hungrily into mine, he lifted my legs so that I could rest my foot on his desk. His hands steadied me on my other leg, making sure I didn't wobble as he went back to kissing.
Those bright eyes were still hungry as they watched the pink flood my cheeks.
